New study shows how seals sleep with only half their brain at a time

TORONTO, ON – A new study led by an international team of biologists has identified some of the brain chemicals that allow seals to sleep with half of their brain at a time. The study was published this month in the Journal of Neuroscience and was headed by scientists at UCLA and the University of Toronto. Canada’s aquatic ecosystems research gets boost from NSERC

TORONTO, ON - Thanks to a funding boost of $4.4 million, the NSERC Canadian Network for Aquatic Ecosystems (CNAES) will play a key role in ensuring well-informed decisions are made when it comes to this country’s wetlands, lakes and rivers. Toronto can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 70 per cent, says U of T prof

TORONTO, ON – Toronto, and other cities around the world, can significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by implementing aggressive but practical policy changes, says a new study by University of Toronto Civil Engineering Professor Chris Kennedy and World Bank climate change specialist Lorraine Sugar, one of Kennedy’s former students. Refocusing important on and off the court, says recent study

Canadian researcher helps put humans on the tree of life

TORONTO, ON - A University of Toronto Scarborough researcher was part of a team that reconstructed the family tree of placental mammals – a diverse group that includes cats, dogs, horses and humans. The research traces placental mammals back to a small, scampering, insect-eating creature that got its start 200,000 years or more after the extinction of the dinosaurs.
