Unravelling the universe: Canada’s largest astronomy symposium to take place at U of T
January 24, 2011
TORONTO, ON – The Astronomy & Space Exploration Society at the University of Toronto is hosting the 8th annual “Expanding Canada’s Frontiers” symposium. The country’s largest astronomy symposium takes place at 7 p.m. on January 28, 2011 at the University of Toronto’s Convocation Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m.
2010 was an exciting year in astronomy. Recent technological developments such as the Large Hadron Collider have allowed us to begin to crack some of the biggest mysteries of the universe. Considering this, the theme of this year’s ASX symposium is, “Unravelling the Universe.”
Guest speakers this year include:
- Dr. Alexei Vladimir Filippenko, from the University of California at Berkeley and one of the world’s premiere researchers on supernovae
- Dr. Michel Lefebvre, founder of the Canadian ATLAS collaboration project and recent chair of the Subatomic Physics Grant Selection Committee of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
- Dr. Gilbert Holder, the Canada Research Chair in Cosmological Astrophysics and associate professor of physics at McGill University
Guest speakers are available for interviews upon request. Media are asked to RSVP for the event in advance.
The Astronomy & Space Exploration Society is a non-profit organization run by students at U of T. It was founded in 2003 and has grown to over 2100 members with the goal to educate, excite and inspire students and enthusiasts about the wonders of space.
