Grand opening of Farmers’ Market brings local produce to community

TORONTO, ON — The Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Scar­bor­ough (UTSC) will now host a week­ly Farm­ers’ Mar­ket through­out the sum­mer and fall pro­mot­ing local fresh pro­duce and sus­tain­abil­i­ty for the ben­e­fit of the uni­ver­si­ty and local com­mu­ni­ty. Sup­port­ed by the Durham Region Culi­nary Asso­ci­a­tion, the Farm­ers’ Mar­ket will take place every Mon­day begin­ning July 12 until Octo­ber 25, 2010. An offi­cial open­ing cer­e­mo­ny will take place on July 12 at 4:30 pm in the out­er park­ing lot. Every­one is wel­come and park­ing is free.

Ven­dors from the Greater Toron­to Area (GTA) will be sell­ing fresh fruits, veg­eta­bles, baked goods, cheese, hon­ey and much more. Through sus­tain­able food pro­duc­tion prac­tices, all ven­dors pro­duce local­ly grown farm prod­ucts with­in Ontario and the GTA.

By host­ing the week­ly mar­ket, UTSC is pleased to pro­mote the ben­e­fits of buy­ing local and to pro­vide the greater com­mu­ni­ty with access to local­ly grown, sus­tain­ably-pro­duced, healthy food. Over­time, UTSC will con­tin­ue to sup­port the mar­ket ini­tia­tive through edu­ca­tion­al pro­grams with the help of guest pro­fes­sion­al chefs, nutri­tion­ists and the pro­duc­ers of local prod­ucts and pro­duce. This ini­tia­tive will link to research, pro­grams and ser­vices on cam­pus that inves­ti­gate the ben­e­fits of sus­tain­able farm­ing and good food man­age­ment.
