John A. Tory Fellowship established at University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management

TORONTO, ON – A fel­low­ship in mem­o­ry of John A. Tory has been estab­lished at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment with an $180,000 com­mit­ment from Thom­son Reuters.

The annu­al fel­low­ship will pro­vide a $40,000 award to a Full-Time MBA stu­dent. The recip­i­ent will also have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to par­tic­i­pate in a com­pet­i­tive 10-week paid intern­ship in the Sum­mer Asso­ciates Pro­gram at Thom­son Reuters pri­or to their last year of study.

“John Tory was an opti­mist who believed the future yields untold promise.  In his hon­our, we are pleased to part­ner with the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to to sup­port the next gen­er­a­tion of busi­ness lead­ers, con­sis­tent with John’s lega­cy of pas­sion and curios­i­ty for all facets of busi­ness com­bined with his unpar­al­leled grace, integri­ty, humil­i­ty and work eth­ic,” said David Thom­son, chair­man of Thom­son Reuters.

“We are hum­bled by the oppor­tu­ni­ty to house the John Tory Fel­low­ship at the Rot­man School.  John was a friend and col­league and one of the finest busi­ness minds of his gen­er­a­tion. In addi­tion, as every­one who ever worked with him knew, he had absolute­ly impec­ca­ble prin­ci­pals.  This award will be an inspi­ra­tion to our stu­dents,” said Roger Mar­tin, Dean of the Rot­man School.

John A. Tory was a Toron­to lawyer and busi­ness­man, a part­ner of the law firm Torys LLP, and well known advi­sor and direc­tor to some of Canada’s best known firms includ­ing The Thom­son Cor­po­ra­tion, Rogers Com­mu­ni­ca­tions and the Roy­al Bank of Cana­da.  He served as the Pres­i­dent of Wood­bridge, the Thom­son fam­i­ly hold­ing com­pa­ny, from 1973 to 1998 and served as Deputy Chair­man of The Thom­son Cor­po­ra­tion from 1978 to 1997. He was a mem­ber of the board of Thom­son Reuters at the time of his death ear­li­er this year. Mr. Tory grad­u­at­ed from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to with a law degree in 1952.
