Baruch College Team Successfully Defends its Title at the Rotman International Trading Competition

Toron­to, ON – For the sec­ond year in row a team from the Mas­ter of Finan­cial Engi­neer­ing pro­gram at Baruch Col­lege in New York City has won the Rot­man Inter­na­tion­al Trad­ing Com­pe­ti­tion. The 14th annu­al edi­tion of one of the world’s pre­em­i­nent trad­ing com­pe­ti­tions was host­ed by the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment from Feb­ru­ary 23 to 25.

Teams rep­re­sent­ing 52 dif­fer­ent uni­ver­si­ties from across Cana­da, the Unit­ed States, Europe, Africa and Asia par­tic­i­pat­ed in the com­pe­ti­tion which took place in the Rot­man School’s BMO Finan­cial Group Finance Research and Trad­ing Lab and uti­lized the Rot­man Inter­ac­tive Trad­er, an order-dri­ven mar­ket sim­u­la­tor, which was devel­oped in-house at the Rot­man School.

Plac­ing sec­ond over­all was a team from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­gary while a team from LUISS Gui­do Car­li Uni­ver­si­ty of Rome con­tin­ued a string of strong per­for­mances by fin­ish­ing third. A team with rep­re­sen­ta­tives from the Rot­man School’s Mas­ter of Finan­cial Risk Man­age­ment and UofT’s Mas­ter of Finan­cial Engi­neer­ing, Com­put­er Sci­ence, and UTSC Bach­e­lor of Busi­ness Admin­is­tra­tion pro­grams placed sev­enth.

In the indi­vid­ual cas­es LUISS Gui­do Car­li Uni­ver­si­ty of Rome was the top per­former in the Volatil­i­ty Trad­ing Case; Uni­ver­si­ty of Water­loo came out on top in the Cred­it Risk Case; Baruch Col­lege won the Algo­rith­mic Trad­ing Case; HEC Mon­tréal was the top per­former in the Flow Traders ETF Case; Uni­ver­si­ty of Con­necti­cut won the Quan­ti­ta­tive Open Out­cry Case; and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­gary was first in the Com­modi­ties Case.

BP was the main spon­sor of the com­pe­ti­tion and also spon­sored the BP Com­modi­ties Trad­ing Case. Oth­er case spon­sors includ­ed Flow Traders, Math­Works, and S&P Glob­al Mar­ket Intel­li­gence. DRW Trad­ing Group was a bronze spon­sor.

The Rot­man School’s BMO Finan­cial Group Finance Research and Trad­ing Lab is designed to pro­mote expe­ri­en­tial learn­ing in the area of finan­cial mar­kets and data. The com­pe­ti­tion cas­es are imple­ment­ed on the high­ly acclaimed Rot­man Inter­ac­tive Trad­er appli­ca­tion, a mar­ket sim­u­la­tion tool being used in over 50 uni­ver­si­ties and finan­cial insti­tu­tions around the world.
