New insights into the ‘borderline personality’ brain
TORONTO, ON — New work by University of Toronto Scarborough researchers gives the best description yet of the neural circuits that underlie a severe mental illness called Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and could lead to better treatments and diagnosis. The work shows that brain regions that process negative emotions (for example, anger and sadness) are overactive in people with BPD, while brain regions that would normally help damp down negative emotions are underactive. New collaboration between CCRM and Nikon to reap benefits outside the lab
TORONTO, ON – The Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) has entered into an agreement with Nikon Corporation to place the Nikon BioStation CT Integrated Cell Culture Observation System, and related software, in CCRM’s product development facility to perform high throughput studies of patient-derived stem cell responsiveness to test molecules in a controlled environment. Atmospheric physicist named director of University of Toronto’s new School of the Environment
TORONTO, ON - Kimberly Strong, a physicist who leads investigations of the Earth’s atmosphere, will soon lead the University of Toronto’s new School of the Environment. Her term begins on July 1, 2013. Strong’s research in atmospheric measurements examines such key environmental issues as climate change and its relationship to contributing factors including stratospheric ozone depletion and tropospheric pollution.
