University of Toronto announces strategic collaboration with Janssen Inc. and Johnson & Johnson Innovation

TORONTO, ON — The University of Toronto today announced a new strategic open innovation collaboration with Janssen Inc. facilitated by the Johnson & Johnson Innovation center of California that will support research through the Collaborative Center for Drug Research (CCDR). U of T researchers develop tool to tell if tremors are real or a ruse by drug-seeking addicts

TORONTO, ON - It’s a common scenario in emergency rooms across Canada: a patient suddenly stops regular, excessive alcohol consumption and develops withdrawal – a potentially fatal condition. The most common clinical sign of withdrawal is tremor, especially in the hands and arms. But judging tremor severity is harder than it sounds; it requires considerable medical expertise and even experienced doctors’ estimates can vary widely. Liberal democracy is possible in Muslim-majority countries

G20 members comply with 2013 St. Petersburg Summit employment commitments better than climate change

Despite a significant reduction in smog-producing toxins in past decade, GTA still violates Canada’s ozone standards

TORONTO, ON - A new study shows that while the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) has significantly reduced some of the toxins that contribute to smog, the city continues to violate the Canada-wide standards for ozone air pollution. Smog, which can cause or aggravate health problems such as asthma, emphysema and chronic bronchitis, is produced by a set of complex photochemical reactions involving volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen oxides and sunlight, which form ground-level ozone. U of T research helps explain why elderly are prone to sleep problems

TORONTO, ON - New research led by University of Toronto neurologist Andrew Lim sheds light on sleep disruption in aging adults. "In many older people with insomnia and other patterns of sleep disruption, the underlying cause is unknown,” said Lim, assistant professor of neurology and neuroscientist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences. “We provide evidence that loss of neurons in a particular region of the brain that controls sleep may be an important contributor to insomnia in many older individuals.” Reported online…
