Young Toronto community housing residents race to success at annual track and field meet

TORONTO, ON — Toron­to Com­mu­ni­ty Hous­ing, togeth­er with the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to track and field pro­gram, is invit­ing 300 aspir­ing young track and field ath­letes to com­pete at the world-class Var­si­ty Cen­tre on July 31. At the ninth annu­al Search for the Stars event, Olympic Team Tri­al­ist Tania Archer will make a spe­cial address before par­tic­i­pants launch into a day of track and field com­pe­ti­tion.

Promis­ing ath­letes, who are also Toron­to Com­mu­ni­ty Hous­ing res­i­dents, have the chance to be award­ed one of up to 10 schol­ar­ships to train with the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Junior Devel­op­ment Track and Field Acad­e­my. The event is a TO2015 IGNITE com­mu­ni­ty part­ner­ship pro­gram of the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games.

The track meet is just one exam­ple of how Toron­to Com­mu­ni­ty Hous­ing is cel­e­brat­ing its Year of the Youth by engag­ing young peo­ple through ini­tia­tives that encour­age healthy, pos­i­tive activ­i­ties.

The Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s track and field pro­grams oper­ate out of U of T’s Fac­ul­ty of Kine­si­ol­o­gy and Phys­i­cal Edu­ca­tion, which leads an exten­sive range of research, edu­ca­tion and co-cur­ric­u­lar phys­i­cal activ­i­ty and sport pro­grams. The Faculty’s co-cur­ric­u­lar ini­tia­tives engage ath­letes from play­ground to podi­um with a research-sup­port­ed approach, mak­ing it one of the broad­est, most inno­v­a­tive pro­grams of its kind in North Amer­i­ca.
