Vic One: Celebrating 10 Years of Innovation in Education

April 8, 2013

TORONTO, ON — Join Victoria College in the University of Toronto as it celebrates the first decade of success of the premier Vic One program with alumni, current students and faculty from the program.

Vic One is credited with transforming the first-year, undergraduate experience at Victoria College in the University of Toronto. The first of the “One” programs on U of T’s campus, it introduced the notion of small group seminars, lectures and tutorials led by prominent professors.

“Vic One has transformed Victoria College and influenced the academic offerings across all University of Toronto colleges and at other universities in Canada,” says Professor Angela Esterhammer, principal of Victoria College.

About Vic One:

What makes Vic One unique is the weekly plenary session which brings together students from all six streams of the program. This creates an interdisciplinary approach, where the students hear from noted scientists, thinkers, industry leaders, artists, writers, ambassadors and other public figures. Plenary speakers have included notable Vic graduates, Ken Taylor, Norman Jewison, Margaret Atwood and Robert Bateman, as well as other well-known Canadian figures including James Bartleman, June Callwood, Jean Chrétien, James Orbinski and Ann-Marie MacDonald.

The Vic One program is divided into six streams of study, each named after a distinguished figure from Vic’s history: The Northrop Frye Stream (humanities); The Norman Jewison Stream (arts); The Lester B. Pearson Stream (social sciences); The Egerton Ryerson Stream (education); The Arthur Schawlow Stream (math and physical sciences); and The Augusta Stowe-Gullen Stream (life sciences).

Classes are capped at 25 students to foster a personalized learning experience which allows students to know their professors and peers while having the benefits of studying at U of T, one of the top research universities in the world. Students undertake original research assignments and some have published co-authored academic articles with their professors.
