Dean’s Awards for Excellence in Research and Teaching awarded to Rotman faculty

TORONTO, ON – Three fac­ul­ty mem­bers at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment have been named the recip­i­ents of the 2011 Dean’s Awards for Excel­lence in Research and Teach­ing. The pur­pose of the awards is to annu­al­ly rec­og­nize and encour­age excel­lence in the research and teach­ing activ­i­ties of Rot­man fac­ul­ty mem­bers.

Mara Led­er­man, an asso­ciate pro­fes­sor of strate­gic man­age­ment and San­ford DeVoe, an assis­tant pro­fes­sor of orga­ni­za­tion­al behav­iour and human resource man­age­ment, are the co-win­ners of the Award for Excel­lence in Research. Francesco Bova, an assis­tant pro­fes­sor of account­ing, received the Award for Excel­lence in Teach­ing.

Prof. Led­er­man has been a fac­ul­ty mem­ber at the Rot­man School since 2003. She holds a PhD from the Mass­a­chu­setts Insti­tute of Tech­nol­o­gy. Her research is in the area of indus­tri­al orga­ni­za­tion and strat­e­gy and has pub­lished numer­ous papers on the air­line and video game indus­tries. Her work has appeared in many lead­ing aca­d­e­m­ic jour­nals in eco­nom­ics and strate­gic man­age­ment.

Prof. DeVoe came to the Rot­man School in 2007 after com­plet­ing a PhD at Stan­ford Uni­ver­si­ty. His research exam­ines the psy­cho­log­i­cal dimen­sions of incen­tives with­in orga­ni­za­tions includ­ing look­ing at the trade­offs between time and mon­ey and how each is val­ued. He is an edi­to­r­i­al board mem­ber for the Acad­e­my of Man­age­ment Jour­nal and a review­er for many of the lead­ing aca­d­e­m­ic jour­nals in orga­ni­za­tion­al behav­iour and psy­chol­o­gy.

Prof. Bova joined the Rot­man School in 2008 after com­plet­ing a PhD at the Yale School of Man­age­ment. Since 2009 he has taught a finan­cial account­ing course in the first year of the Rot­man Full Time MBA pro­gram win­ning an Excel­lence in Teach­ing Award each year. In 2009 he cre­at­ed and began teach­ing a five day pre-course aimed at stu­dents unfa­mil­iar with finan­cial account­ing, which is offered before the start of the Full Time MBA pro­gram. He has also taught in the Rot­man Com­merce and PhD pro­grams.

In addi­tion, 135 instruc­tors were hon­oured with Rot­man Excel­lence in Teach­ing Awards for the 2010-11 aca­d­e­m­ic year. This Award is based on stu­dents’ eval­u­a­tions of instruc­tors’ per­for­mance in the Rot­man School’s MBA, Mas­ter of Finance, Exec­u­tive MBA, OMNIUM Glob­al Exec­u­tive MBA and Rot­man Com­merce pro­grams. Stu­dents ranked instruc­tors on a scale of 1 through 7. The cri­te­ria to receive this Award is to be rat­ed 6.0 or high­er. In the pre­vi­ous year, 116 instruc­tors received the award.
