Rotman School professor honoured twice by the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences

TORONTO, ON — A pro­fes­sor at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment received two awards for life­time achieve­ment from the Insti­tute for Oper­a­tions Research and the Man­age­ment Sci­ences (INFORMS) at their annu­al meet­ing held in Char­lotte, NC this week.

Prof. Oded Berman was named a Fel­low of INFORMS for his out­stand­ing life­time achieve­ment in oper­a­tions research and the man­age­ment sci­ences and for demon­strat­ing excep­tion­al accom­plish­ments and mak­ing sig­nif­i­cant con­tri­bu­tions to the advance­ment of OR/MS dur­ing his aca­d­e­m­ic career.

He also received a Life­time Achieve­ment Award by INFORM­S’s Sec­tion on Loca­tion Analy­sis. The award is giv­en every three years to a researcher who has made sig­nif­i­cant life­time con­tri­bu­tions to loca­tion analy­sis research.

Oded Berman is the Syd­ney Coop­er Chair in Busi­ness and Tech­nol­o­gy and a pro­fes­sor of oper­a­tions man­age­ment. He is a for­mer asso­ciate dean of pro­grams at the Rot­man School.  He received his PhD (1978) in Oper­a­tions Research from the Mass­a­chu­setts Insti­tute of Tech­nol­o­gy.  He had been with the Elec­tron­ic Sys­tems Lab at MIT, the Uni­ver­si­ty of Cal­gary, and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Mass­a­chu­setts at Boston, where he was also the Chair­man of the Depart­ment of Man­age­ment Sci­ences.

He has pub­lished over 200 ref­er­eed arti­cles and has con­tributed to sev­er­al books in his field.  His main research inter­ests include oper­a­tions man­age­ment in the ser­vice indus­try, loca­tion the­o­ry, net­work mod­els, and sto­chas­tic inven­to­ry con­trol.  He served as an Area Edi­tor for Oper­a­tions Research and as an Asso­ciate Edi­tor for Man­age­ment Sci­ence. He is cur­rent­ly an Asso­ciate Edi­tor for Trans­porta­tion Sci­ence and Socio-Eco­nom­ic Plan­ning Sci­ences.

The Insti­tute for Oper­a­tions Research and the Man­age­ment Sci­ences (INFORMS®) is an inter­na­tion­al sci­en­tif­ic soci­ety with 10,000 mem­bers, includ­ing Nobel Prize lau­re­ates, ded­i­cat­ed to apply­ing sci­en­tif­ic meth­ods to help improve deci­sion-mak­ing, man­age­ment, and oper­a­tions. Mem­bers of INFORMS work in busi­ness, gov­ern­ment, and acad­e­mia. They are rep­re­sent­ed in fields as diverse as air­lines, health care, law enforce­ment, the mil­i­tary, finan­cial engi­neer­ing, and telecom­mu­ni­ca­tions. INFORMS serves the sci­en­tif­ic and pro­fes­sion­al needs of oper­a­tions research ana­lysts, experts in ana­lyt­ics, con­sul­tants, sci­en­tists, stu­dents, edu­ca­tors, and man­agers, as well as their insti­tu­tions, by pub­lish­ing a vari­ety of jour­nals that describe the lat­est research in oper­a­tions research.
