Health management expert joins the Rotman School of Management. Appointment will strengthen research and teaching capabilities of Rotman Centre for health sector strategy.

TORONTO, ON – A leader in health sec­tor and cor­po­rate strat­e­gy has joined the fac­ul­ty of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment.

Will Mitchell, who joins the Rot­man School from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Man­age­ment, will hold the Antho­ny S. Fell Chair in New Tech­nolo­gies and Com­mer­cial­iza­tion and also be a Full Pro­fes­sor of Strate­gic Man­age­ment.

Prof. Mitchel­l’s appoint­ment, which is effec­tive on July 1, will great­ly strength­en the capa­bil­i­ties of the world-class Cen­tre for Health Sec­tor Strat­e­gy at the Rot­man School and expand the course offer­ings in the Rot­man MBA  and Exec­u­tive Edu­ca­tion pro­grams. Since 2003 the Rot­man School has offered an MBA Major in Health Sec­tor Man­age­ment and offers numer­ous Exec­u­tive Pro­grams for health-care pro­fes­sion­als in both the pub­lic and pri­vate sec­tors.  The Rot­man School is the lead­ing provider of senior lead­er­ship devel­op­ment pro­grams for hos­pi­tals in Ontario.

Prof. Mitchell will teach new sec­ond year elec­tives in the Rot­man MBA pro­gram on Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal Strat­e­gy and Med­ical Device Strat­e­gy. This is in addi­tion to exist­ing health man­age­ment elec­tives such as Health Pol­i­cy and Eco­nom­ics, Health­care Con­sult­ing, and Health Sec­tor Strat­e­gy and Orga­ni­za­tion.

Prof. Mitchell is a fac­ul­ty asso­ciate of Duke’s Cen­ter for Entre­pre­neur­ship and Inno­va­tion, Health Sec­tor Man­age­ment Pro­gram, and Glob­al Health Ini­tia­tive. He teach­es cor­po­rate strat­e­gy, busi­ness dynam­ics, and health sec­tor strat­e­gy in the MBA, MMS, PhD, and Exec­u­tive Edu­ca­tion pro­grams at Duke, as well as in part­ner­ship pro­grams in Africa and else­where. Pri­or to join­ing Duke Uni­ver­si­ty in 2001, he was on fac­ul­ty at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Michi­gan.

Prof. Mitchell stud­ies busi­ness dynam­ics, focus­ing on how busi­ness­es in devel­oped and emerg­ing mar­kets change as the com­pet­i­tive envi­ron­ments change and, in turn, how the busi­ness changes con­tribute to ongo­ing cor­po­rate suc­cess or fail­ure. He is a co-edi­tor of Strate­gic Man­age­ment Jour­nal, an edi­to­r­i­al board mem­ber of sev­er­al strat­e­gy-relat­ed jour­nals in North Amer­i­ca, Asia, and Europe, and a board mem­ber of Neu­land Lab­o­ra­to­ries, Ltd. in Hyder­abad, India.

Under the lead­er­ship of Prof. Bri­an Gold­en and a board of advi­sors from indus­try, gov­ern­ment, health­care providers and acad­e­mia, the Cen­tre for Health Sec­tor Strat­e­gy at the Rot­man School dri­ves a research agen­da that is aimed at pro­duc­ing action­able man­age­ment knowl­edge for the health sec­tor and the life sci­ences.

“We’ve made great progress in the last sev­er­al years in our attempts to bring the prin­ci­ples of busi­ness, eco­nom­ics and val­ue to the health sec­tor, but we need to go fur­ther, par­tic­u­lar­ly in the area of life sci­ences com­mer­cial­iza­tion.  In Cana­da alone we invest over $2.6 bil­lion dol­lars in med­ical research, and most will agree that we need to do more get the full val­ue from those invest­ments.  Will Mitchell, through his research, teach­ing and advis­ing will make a tremen­dous con­tri­bu­tion in this area,” says Prof. Gold­en.
