Health management expert joins the Rotman School of Management. Appointment will strengthen research and teaching capabilities of Rotman Centre for health sector strategy.

TORONTO, ON – A leader in health sector and corporate strategy has joined the faculty of the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
Will Mitchell, who joins the Rotman School from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Management, will hold the Anthony S. Fell Chair in New Technologies and Commercialization and also be a Full Professor of Strategic Management.
Prof. Mitchell’s appointment, which is effective on July 1, will greatly strengthen the capabilities of the world-class Centre for Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School and expand the course offerings in the Rotman MBA and Executive Education programs. Since 2003 the Rotman School has offered an MBA Major in Health Sector Management and offers numerous Executive Programs for health-care professionals in both the public and private sectors. The Rotman School is the leading provider of senior leadership development programs for hospitals in Ontario.
Prof. Mitchell will teach new second year electives in the Rotman MBA program on Pharmaceutical Strategy and Medical Device Strategy. This is in addition to existing health management electives such as Health Policy and Economics, Healthcare Consulting, and Health Sector Strategy and Organization.
Prof. Mitchell is a faculty associate of Duke’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Health Sector Management Program, and Global Health Initiative. He teaches corporate strategy, business dynamics, and health sector strategy in the MBA, MMS, PhD, and Executive Education programs at Duke, as well as in partnership programs in Africa and elsewhere. Prior to joining Duke University in 2001, he was on faculty at the University of Michigan.
Prof. Mitchell studies business dynamics, focusing on how businesses in developed and emerging markets change as the competitive environments change and, in turn, how the business changes contribute to ongoing corporate success or failure. He is a co-editor of Strategic Management Journal, an editorial board member of several strategy-related journals in North America, Asia, and Europe, and a board member of Neuland Laboratories, Ltd. in Hyderabad, India.
Under the leadership of Prof. Brian Golden and a board of advisors from industry, government, healthcare providers and academia, the Centre for Health Sector Strategy at the Rotman School drives a research agenda that is aimed at producing actionable management knowledge for the health sector and the life sciences.
“We’ve made great progress in the last several years in our attempts to bring the principles of business, economics and value to the health sector, but we need to go further, particularly in the area of life sciences commercialization. In Canada alone we invest over $2.6 billion dollars in medical research, and most will agree that we need to do more get the full value from those investments. Will Mitchell, through his research, teaching and advising will make a tremendous contribution in this area,” says Prof. Golden.
