2014 Indigenous Education Week
February 18, 2014
TORONTO, ON – The work and research of Indigenous scholars, students and community members will be on display February 24–28 during the 2014 Indigenous Education Week (IEW), an event organized by the University of Toronto’s First Nations House.
IEW is an annual week-long series of events that highlights the contribution of Indigenous knowledge to education. Students, staff, faculty, and the community will have the opportunity to participate in and learn about diverse Indigenous cultures; locally and globally. Events range from roundtable discussions, craft workshops, teachings, film screenings, and cultural exchange.
“IEW presents the work and research of Indigenous scholars, students and community members to the University community,” said Jonathan Hamilton-Diabo, Director of First Nations House. “This year, the theme is ‘Connecting Community and Research.’
“The week will see prominent educators share their knowledge, expertise and experiences to a wide audience. It also shows how Indigenous people are involved in research and work that not only benefit Indigenous communities, but also society as a whole.”
First Nations House provides culturally-relevant services to Aboriginal students that support and unite academic success with personal growth and leadership development. This event is presented in partnership with: Ontario Institute for Studies in Education; Centre for Aboriginal Initiatives; Temerty Temerty Faculty of Medicine; Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education; University of Toronto Scarborough; University of Toronto Mississauga; Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing; Anti-Racism and Cultural Diversity Office; and, Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work.
All events are free and open to the public. See the complete schedule of events here.
