2014 Indigenous Education Week

TORONTO, ON – The work and research of Indige­nous schol­ars, stu­dents and com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers will be on dis­play Feb­ru­ary 24–28 dur­ing the 2014 Indige­nous Edu­ca­tion Week (IEW), an event orga­nized by the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s First Nations House.

IEW is an annu­al week-long series of events that high­lights the con­tri­bu­tion of Indige­nous knowl­edge to edu­ca­tion. Stu­dents, staff, fac­ul­ty, and the com­mu­ni­ty will have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to par­tic­i­pate in and learn about diverse Indige­nous cul­tures; local­ly and glob­al­ly. Events range from round­table dis­cus­sions, craft work­shops, teach­ings, film screen­ings, and cul­tur­al exchange. 

“IEW presents the work and research of Indige­nous schol­ars, stu­dents and com­mu­ni­ty mem­bers to the Uni­ver­si­ty com­mu­ni­ty,” said Jonathan Hamil­ton-Dia­bo, Direc­tor of First Nations House. “This year, the theme is ‘Con­nect­ing Com­mu­ni­ty and Research.’

“The week will see promi­nent edu­ca­tors share their knowl­edge, exper­tise and expe­ri­ences to a wide audi­ence. It also shows how Indige­nous peo­ple are involved in research and work that not only ben­e­fit Indige­nous com­mu­ni­ties, but also soci­ety as a whole.”

First Nations House pro­vides cul­tur­al­ly-rel­e­vant ser­vices to Abo­rig­i­nal stu­dents that sup­port and unite aca­d­e­m­ic suc­cess with per­son­al growth and lead­er­ship devel­op­ment. This event is pre­sent­ed in part­ner­ship with: Ontario Insti­tute for Stud­ies in Edu­ca­tion; Cen­tre for Abo­rig­i­nal Ini­tia­tives; Temer­ty Temer­ty Fac­ul­ty of Med­i­cine; Fac­ul­ty of Kine­si­ol­o­gy & Phys­i­cal Edu­ca­tion; Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Scar­bor­ough; Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Mis­sis­sauga; Lawrence S. Bloomberg Fac­ul­ty of Nurs­ing; Anti-Racism and Cul­tur­al Diver­si­ty Office; and, Fac­tor-Inwen­tash Fac­ul­ty of Social Work.
