With a tweet, astronomers crack open mystery of a massive bulge at the center of our galaxy

Lang, an astronomer at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Dun­lap Insti­tute, had been map­ping out galax­ies thanks to data from WISE, NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Sur­vey Explor­er. NASA launched the space­craft in 2009, and by 2011, WISE had scanned the sky with infrared light twice over. All told, with­in WISE’s data sit some 750 mil­lion stars, aster­oids, galax­ies and oth­er heav­en­ly objects. Read more.
