A group at the University of Toronto led by Ted Sargent found that when a gold surface was shaped into needles the electric current became highly concentrated at their tips. They demonstrated an order of magnitude increase in the current density over metal rods or nanoparticles, to 22 milliamps per square centimeter. Read more.
