Two new appointments at Rotman ICPM strengthen Centre’s strategic and operational capabilities

Toron­to, ON – Two glob­al pen­sion and invest­ment lead­ers, Rob Bauer and Don­ald Ray­mond, have been appoint­ed to the Rot­man Inter­na­tion­al Cen­tre for Pen­sion Man­age­ment (Rot­man ICPM), an inter­na­tion­al­ly-rec­og­nized research cen­tre for effec­tive pen­sion design and man­age­ment at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment.

Rob Bauer was appoint­ed to a five-year term as exec­u­tive direc­tor of Rot­man ICPM. He has been involved with the Cen­tre since its incep­tion in 2005. He was a mem­ber of the board from 2005 through 2010; as a rep­re­sen­ta­tive of Algemene Burg­er­lijk Pen­sioen­fonds, a Rot­man ICPM research part­ner from the Nether­lands from 2005 to 2007; and, as an inde­pen­dent board mem­ber from 2007 to 2010. He then served as the Rot­man ICPM’s asso­ciate direc­tor pro­grams in charge of dis­cus­sion forums until his ini­tial appoint­ment as exec­u­tive direc­tor in May 2014.

Bauer is also a pro­fes­sor of finance (chair: insti­tu­tion­al invest­ments) at the School of Busi­ness and Eco­nom­ics at Maas­tricht Uni­ver­si­ty in the Nether­lands. He is inter­na­tion­al­ly rec­og­nized for his research on pen­sion funds, mutu­al funds, behav­iour­al finance, social­ly respon­si­ble invest­ments and cor­po­rate gov­er­nance. He advis­es sev­er­al pen­sion funds and oth­er insti­tu­tion­al investors on pen­sion and invest­ment-relat­ed sub­jects.

Don­ald Ray­mond, an adjunct pro­fes­sor at the Rot­man School, has been named as spe­cial advi­sor to the Dean and chair emer­i­tus of Rot­man ICPM. Ray­mond is cur­rent­ly man­ag­ing part­ner and chief invest­ment offi­cer of Align­vest Man­age­ment Cor­po­ra­tion. Pri­or to join­ing Align­vest in April 2014, he served for over 12 years on the senior man­age­ment team of the Cana­da Pen­sion Plan Invest­ment Board (CPPIB), most recent­ly as its first Chief Invest­ment Strate­gist. Pri­or to join­ing CPPIB in 2001, he worked for Gold­man Sachs for sev­en years. He holds a PhD in engi­neer­ing from Queen’s Uni­ver­si­ty, where he is also cur­rent­ly on the Board of Trustees and chairs its Invest­ment Com­mit­tee.

At the Rot­man School, Ray­mond served on the found­ing advi­so­ry board for Rot­man ICPM, from 2005 until March 2014, serv­ing the last six years as chair. Since 2010 he has taught the Invest­ments course in the school’s Mas­ter of Finance pro­gram with fac­ul­ty in the school’s finance area. In his new role, he has a man­date to pro­vide lead­er­ship on the strate­gic direc­tion of Rot­man ICPM as well as the devel­op­ment of new ini­tia­tives. He will also con­nect the activ­i­ties of Rot­man ICPM with the Cana­di­an pen­sion com­mu­ni­ty and devel­op capac­i­ty with­in the Rot­man School to play a larg­er on-going role in the centre’s work.

The mis­sion of the Rot­man Inter­na­tion­al Cen­tre for Pen­sion Man­age­ment (Rot­man ICPM) is to be an inter­na­tion­al­ly-rec­og­nized, high-impact cat­a­lyst for fos­ter­ing effec­tive pen­sion design and man­age­ment. Some of the tools used to achieve this goal include the fund­ing of objec­tive and trans­for­ma­tive research, the orga­ni­za­tion of inter­ac­tive, action-ori­ent­ed dis­cus­sion forums, and the deliv­ery of the globe’s lead­ing gov­er­nance edu­ca­tion pro­gram for Board mem­bers of pen­sion and oth­er long-hori­zon invest­ment insti­tu­tions.
