Rotman School Leader in Health Sector Policy Appointed as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences

Toronto, ON – A recognized leader in health policy and management at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Prof. Brian Golden is Vice-Dean, Professional Programs and is the Sandra Rotman Chair in Health Sector Strategy at the UofT and University Health Network. He is the first faculty member from a business school to receive the honour.
Fellows of the Academy are elected on the basis of their demonstrated leadership, creativity, distinctive competencies and commitment to advance academic health sciences and is considered one of the highest honours for members of the Canadian health sciences community.
Prof. Golden was inducted as a Fellow at the Academy’s annual meeting in Montreal last evening.
“An accomplished researcher and educator in the field of management, Prof. Golden is recognized as a leading interdisciplinary scholar in health system sustainability and organizational strategy. His innovative and inclusive approach to translating research insights into the training of Canada’s health system leaders has made him a prominent and trusted advisor to government on health policy direction and implementation,” said Prof. Vivek Goel, Vice-President, Research and Innovation at the University of Toronto.
A professor at the Rotman School since 2002, Prof. Golden became founding Executive Director of The Collaborative for Health Sector Strategy, a policy, research and leadership development institute funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health in 2006. He is the Rotman School’s National Director for Health Care Leadership Programs.
Prof. Golden conducts research in the areas of strategic change and implementation, health system integration and sustainability, hospital boards, organizational strategy and leadership. Among his published work are articles in The Canadian Medical Association Journal, Health Policy, The Strategic Management Journal, Healthcare Quarterly, Healthcare Papers, The Annals of Pharmacotherapy, Management Science, Clinical Oncology, and Harvard Business Review.
From 2005 to 2010 Prof. Golden was Board Chair of the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES). In 2010, he became Board Chair of Rise Asset Development, a non-profit microfinance organization providing start-up support loans and business advice to clients with mental health and addiction challenges.
His article ’Transforming Healthcare Organizations’ in Healthcare Quarterly is that journal’s most downloaded article of the past twelve years. Among his awards for teaching are Canada’s Ted Freedman Innovation in Healthcare Education Award and the Canadian Medical Association’s inaugural Eureka Award for Innovation in Physician Education.
