Rotman Professor Wins Early Career Award for Operations Management Research

Toron­to, ON – An asso­ciate pro­fes­sor of oper­a­tions man­age­ment has received a pres­ti­gious award which rec­og­nizes his research accom­plish­ments from the Pro­duc­tion and Oper­a­tions Man­age­ment Soci­ety (POMS).

Prof. Ming Hu was pre­sent­ed with the Wick­ham Skin­ner Ear­ly-Career Research Accom­plish­ments Award at the 27th annu­al con­fer­ence of POMS, which was held ear­li­er this month in Orlan­do, FL.  The award is the only one in the field of oper­a­tions man­age­ment that is based on pub­lished or accept­ed for pub­li­ca­tion research with­in 6 years after the nominee’s PhD grad­u­a­tion. Prof. Hu’s body of work was reviewed in terms of its abil­i­ty to broad­en, extend, and alter the way that pro­duc­tion and oper­a­tions man­age­ment is con­cep­tu­al­ized, prac­ticed, and viewed.

“Prof. Hu is a pro­lif­ic researcher who push­es new fron­tiers of research on inno­va­tion oper­a­tions,” not­ed Christo­pher Tang, who is the UCLA Dis­tin­guished Pro­fes­sor and Edward W. Carter Chair in Busi­ness Admin­is­tra­tion at UCLA Ander­son School and the edi­tor of Man­u­fac­tur­ing & Ser­vice Oper­a­tions Man­age­ment.

Prof. Hu’s research explores var­i­ous top­ics in rev­enue man­age­ment and sup­ply chain man­age­ment. His research has received media cov­er­age in Cana­da and inter­na­tion­al­ly. He was the recip­i­ent of Inno­va­tion Research Award by Hewlett-Packard Labs in 2008–2010; Hon­or­able Men­tion in the Junior Fac­ul­ty Inter­est Group Paper Com­pe­ti­tion by the Insti­tute for Oper­a­tions Research and the Man­age­ment Sci­ences (INFORMS) in 2014; and First Prize, Annu­al Con­fer­ence Best Paper Award by Chi­nese Schol­ars Asso­ci­a­tion for Man­age­ment Sci­ence and Engi­neer­ing (CSAMSE) in 2015. In 2016 he was the co-win­ner of the Mar­tin Excel­lence in Research Award, which is pre­sent­ed annu­al­ly to fac­ul­ty mem­bers at the Rot­man School who have achieved dis­tinc­tion for their research activ­i­ties. Prof. Hu’s most recent research has focused on oper­a­tions man­age­ment in the con­text of social buy­ing, crowd­fund­ing, crowd­sourc­ing, and two-sided mar­kets. Prof. Hu received his PhD from Colum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty.

Pro­duc­tion and Oper­a­tions Man­age­ment Soci­ety is an inter­na­tion­al pro­fes­sion­al orga­ni­za­tion rep­re­sent­ing the inter­ests of POM pro­fes­sion­als from around the world. The Soci­ety pub­lish­es the POM Jour­nal, list­ed among Finan­cial Times pre­mier research jour­nals in the annu­al rank­ing of MBA and EMBA pro­grams.
