Edward Iacobucci to become new Dean of University of Toronto’s Faculty of Law

TORONTO, ON – The Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to today announced the appoint­ment of Pro­fes­sor Edward Iacobuc­ci as dean of the Fac­ul­ty of Law at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to for a five-year term, begin­ning Jan­u­ary 1, 2015, and end­ing Decem­ber 31, 2019.

“The Fac­ul­ty of Law at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to is a great Cana­di­an insti­tu­tion, and one of the world’s best law schools,” said Iacobuc­ci. “I am enor­mous­ly for­tu­nate to be asso­ci­at­ed with the Fac­ul­ty, and am hum­bled and hon­oured to be its next dean.”

Iacobuc­ci is cur­rent­ly pro­fes­sor, asso­ciate dean of research, and Osler Chair in Busi­ness Law at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Fac­ul­ty of Law. Since begin­ning his career at the Fac­ul­ty in 1998, Iacobuc­ci has been a vis­it­ing pro­fes­sor at New York Uni­ver­si­ty Law School in 2007, vis­it­ing pro­fes­sor at Uni­ver­si­ty of Chica­go Law School in 2003, and a John M. Olin Vis­it­ing Fel­low at Colum­bia Uni­ver­si­ty Law School in 2002. Pri­or to join­ing the Fac­ul­ty of Law, he was the John M. Olin Vis­it­ing Lec­tur­er at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Vir­ginia in 1997–98, and served as law clerk at the Supreme Court of Cana­da for Mr. Jus­tice John Sopin­ka in 1996–97.

Iacobuc­ci has a lengthy his­to­ry of ser­vice to the Uni­ver­si­ty and the com­mu­ni­ty through var­i­ous admin­is­tra­tive and lead­er­ship appoint­ments, includ­ing being an active mem­ber of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Gov­ern­ing Coun­cil, a fel­low-in-res­i­dence at the C.D. Howe Insti­tute, and a past pres­i­dent of the Cana­di­an Law and Eco­nom­ics Asso­ci­a­tion.

He con­tributes sig­nif­i­cant­ly to the schol­ar­ly and teach­ing excel­lence of the Fac­ul­ty. His areas of inter­est include cor­po­rate law, com­pe­ti­tion law, and law and eco­nom­ics. He was the recip­i­ent of the first Mewett Award for Excel­lence in Teach­ing at Fac­ul­ty of Law in 2000 and was a joint win­ner with his co-authors of the 2002-03 Doug Purvis Memo­r­i­al Prize in Cana­di­an eco­nom­ic pol­i­cy for The Law and Eco­nom­ics of Cana­di­an Com­pe­ti­tion Pol­i­cy.

“Pro­fes­sor Iacobuc­ci brings to the posi­tion of dean a com­pre­hen­sive under­stand­ing of the strengths and chal­lenges of the Fac­ul­ty and a pro­gres­sive vision for the future,” said Provost Cheryl Regehr. “He has a cel­e­brat­ed ded­i­ca­tion to teach­ing and an out­stand­ing com­mit­ment to inter­dis­ci­pli­nary schol­ar­ship and soci­etal engage­ment.”

Iacobuc­ci received his B.A. (hon­ours) in eco­nom­ics from Queen’s Uni­ver­si­ty, M.Phil. in eco­nom­ics from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Oxford, and LL.B. from the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Fac­ul­ty of Law.
