Former Rotman School Dean Appointed to the Order of Canada

Toron­to, ON – The for­mer Dean of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment has received one of Canada’s high­est civil­ian hon­ours. Pro­fes­sor Roger Mar­tin, who led the Rot­man School from 1998 to 2013 as Dean, was named as a Mem­ber of the Order of Cana­da for his for his lead­er­ship in busi­ness edu­ca­tion and for his inno­v­a­tive stud­ies in cor­po­rate man­age­ment. The appoint­ment was announced by His Excel­len­cy the Right Hon­ourable David John­ston, Gov­er­nor Gen­er­al of Cana­da, on June 30.

Under Martin’s lead­er­ship, the School saw a dra­mat­ic growth in the size of its pro­grams, fac­ul­ty, facil­i­ties and inter­na­tion­al rep­u­ta­tion. Cur­rent­ly the School’s has been ranked as Canada’s num­ber one busi­ness school for ten years in a row by the Finan­cial Times. In addi­tion, the School’s fac­ul­ty was ranked 3rd in the world for research by the Finan­cial Times in Jan­u­ary. In Sep­tem­ber 2012, a new build­ing expan­sion was offi­cial­ly opened which more than dou­bled the amount of teach­ing, research, study, pre­sen­ta­tion and spe­cial event space avail­able to the Rot­man School com­mu­ni­ty.

“A bril­liant strate­gist, a cre­ative thinker and tire­less edu­ca­tor, Roger Mar­tin trans­formed the Rot­man School into a lead­ing brand in man­age­ment edu­ca­tion and research, renowned for inno­v­a­tive pro­grams and thought lead­er­ship on the most press­ing prob­lems of our time,” says cur­rent Rot­man School Dean Tiff Mack­lem.

Mar­tin is cur­rent­ly the Direc­tor of the Mar­tin Pros­per­i­ty Insti­tute at the Rot­man School, where he leads The Infra­struc­ture of Demo­c­ra­t­ic Cap­i­tal­ism project. He also holds the Premier’s Chair in Pro­duc­tiv­i­ty & Com­pet­i­tive­ness.

His research work is in Inte­gra­tive Think­ing, Busi­ness Design, Strat­e­gy, Cor­po­rate Social Respon­si­bil­i­ty and Coun­try Com­pet­i­tive­ness. He has written​ 23 Har­vard Busi­ness Review arti­cles and pub­lished ​10 books: Get­ting Beyond Bet­ter (with Sal­ly Osberg); Har­vard Busi­ness Review Press (HBRP), 2015) Play­ing to Win (with A.G. Lafley) (HBRP, 2013); Fix­ing the Game (HBRP, 2011); The Design of Busi­ness (HBRP, 2009); The Oppos­able Mind (HBRP, 2007); The Respon­si­bil­i­ty Virus (Basic Books, 2002); Cana­da: What It Is, What It Can Be (with Jim Mil­way, Rot­man-UTP Pub­lish­ing, 2012); Dia­minds (with Mih­nea Moldoveanu, Uni­ver­si­ty of Toron­to Press, 2009); and, The Future of the MBA (with Mih­nea Moldoveanu, Oxford Uni­ver­si­ty Press, 2008). In addi­tion, he co-edit­ed Rot­man on Design (with Karen Chris­tensen, Rot­man-UTP Pub­lish­ing, 2013).

A Cana­di­an from Wal­len­stein, Ontario, Mar­tin received his AB from Har­vard Col­lege, with a con­cen­tra­tion in Eco­nom­ics, in 1979 and his MBA from the Har­vard Busi­ness School in 1981.

Estab­lished in 1967 by Her Majesty Queen Eliz­a­beth II, the Order of Cana­da is the cor­ner­stone of the Cana­di­an Hon­ours Sys­tem, and rec­og­nizes out­stand­ing achieve­ment, ded­i­ca­tion to the com­mu­ni­ty and ser­vice to the nation. The Order rec­og­nizes peo­ple in all sec­tors of Cana­di­an soci­ety. Their con­tri­bu­tions are var­ied, yet they have all enriched the lives of oth­ers and made a dif­fer­ence to this coun­try. More than 6500 Cana­di­ans have received appoint­ments to the Order since its incep­tion.
