Advisory Board and Fellows Appointed to University of Toronto’s Martin Prosperity Institute

Toron­to – A new advi­so­ry board has been appoint­ed at the Mar­tin Pros­per­i­ty Insti­tute (MPI) as the insti­tute also adds two fel­lows to its 2016 ros­ter.

MPI is a research cen­tre at the Uni­ver­si­ty of Toronto’s Rot­man School of Man­age­ment. The cur­rent focus of the insti­tute is its Demo­c­ra­t­ic Cap­i­tal­ism project, which explores ways to improve the crit­i­cal under­pin­nings of our social, polit­i­cal and finan­cial sys­tems.

“Our advi­so­ry board brings togeth­er thought lead­ers from around the world and the Rot­man School to help give shape the work we are doing here at MPI. As we look to pro­vide action­able rec­om­men­da­tions on how to improve the nature and out­comes of demo­c­ra­t­ic cap­i­tal­ism, it is our belief that this board will pro­vide us with the advice and guid­ance nec­es­sary to make a real impact,” says Jami­son Steeve, Exec­u­tive Direc­tor.

The board will be chaired by Geoff Beat­tie, CEO, Gen­er­a­tion Cap­i­tal. Mem­bers include:

  • Bill Downe, Chief Exec­u­tive Offi­cer, BMO Finan­cial Group;
  • Ari­an­na Huff­in­g­ton, Co-Founder and Edi­tor-in-Chief, The Huff­in­g­ton Post;
  • Nina Mažar, Asso­ciate Pro­fes­sor of Mar­ket­ing, Rot­man School of Man­age­ment, and GINI

Behav­ioral Sci­en­tist, Glob­al Insights Ini­tia­tive, The World Bank;

  • Nan­dan Nilekani, For­mer Chair­man of the Unique Iden­ti­fi­ca­tion Author­i­ty of India and co-founder Infos­ys;
  • William Strange, Smart­Cen­tres Chair of Real Estate and Pro­fes­sor of Busi­ness Eco­nom­ics,

Rot­man School of Man­age­ment; and,

  • Tim Sul­li­van, Edi­to­r­i­al Direc­tor, Har­vard Busi­ness Review Press.

In addi­tion, two lead­ing thinkers have been appoint­ed as new MPI fel­lows. MPI wel­comes Zeynop Ton, a new fel­low for 2016, and Lau­ren Jones, MPI’s first junior fel­low. Dur­ing their fel­low­ships each will research a spe­cif­ic area for the Demo­c­ra­t­ic Cap­i­tal­ism project.

Zeynep Ton is an adjunct asso­ciate pro­fes­sor in the oper­a­tions man­age­ment group at MIT Sloan School of Man­age­ment. With MPI she will be build­ing on her ‘Good Jobs Strat­e­gy,’ focus­ing on cre­at­ing tools and mea­sure­ments for orga­ni­za­tions to pro­vide work­ing solu­tions for man­agers, employ­ees, cus­tomers, and investors.

Pro­fes­sor Lau­ren Jones of Ohio State Uni­ver­si­ty is a for­mer col­league of MPI. Pro­fes­sor Jones will aim to iden­ti­fy how high qual­i­ty child­care impacts the abil­i­ty of chil­dren to move up the social lad­der. Her work will exam­ine how com­mu­ni­ty-lev­el mea­sures of access to child­care relate to com­mu­ni­ty-lev­el mea­sures of social mobil­i­ty.
