TORONTO, ON – Unionized faculty and librarians at the University of St. Michael’s College (USMC) in Toronto voted unanimously on Friday, October 5, to ratify a first collective agreement. The USMC Collegium ratified the agreement on the same day, and the contract is now in force.
USMC faculty and librarians with continuing and contractually limited term appointments are represented by the University of Toronto Faculty Association (UTFA), and constitute a certified bargaining unit within the ambit of the Ontario Labour Relations Act. The UTFA-USMC unit certified in February of 2011 and negotiations on a first contract began about one year later.
The University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto is located near Queen’s Park in Toronto, adjacent to the University of Toronto’s downtown campus, and is one of the federated colleges of the U of T.
“The members are very satisfied with the agreement and see it as fair and responsive to the concerns we had when we first certified as a union” emphasized Michael Attridge, Chair of the UTFA-USMC unit and member of the bargaining team.
UTFA President Scott Prudham thanked the two bargaining teams for their hard work. “I want to commend the negotiating teams for coming together last Thursday to work out our remaining differences creatively and in the spirit of respectful engagement. We look forward to representing our colleagues at USMC and to working productively with the Administration at St. Mike’s in the years to come.”
